Commentary

In 1964 I was thirteen.  It was the dawn of the British Invasion and the Beatles had an unheard of five singles in the top twenty.  But there were a lot of old school singers as well: Dean Martin, Barbara Streisand, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, and Roy Orbison.  This year’s list was heavy on popular songs with only one R&B, one folk/country and one instrumental.  There were six black artists.
